The Savana is a conventional full-size van with a payload and towing capacity akin to a truck, and it was primarily designed for commercial use. There are passenger and cargo versions of the Savana available. The 2500 and 3500 models are offered, with the latter offering a larger payload capacity. While the Savana Passenger is available in LS and LT trims, the Savana Cargo is only available in Work Van trim. The base price range, including destination, is $34,695 to $41,795.

Exterior and Interior

With the normal wheelbase, the Savana Cargo has 239.4 cubic feet of cargo space in addition to two front seats. Models with an extended wheelbase may hold up to 283.6 cubic feet. For the 2500 model, the additional length costs $1,900; for the 3500, it costs $800. For $1,965, you may add a second row that seats three people.

With the expanded wheelbase, the 2500 Cargo can carry up to 3,060 pounds, or 3,280 pounds without it. In both lengths, the 3500 model provides an extra 1,000 pounds of capacity. There are 12 seats in four rows for the Savana Passenger. The space created by folding the rows is 218.5 cubic feet. The 3500 is the sole vehicle with the expanded wheelbase, which increases cargo capacity to 255.5 cubic feet.

An entry-level, two-speaker AM/FM audio system with MP3 compatibility comes standard with the Savana. For an additional $1,185, the optional Communications Package—which requires the V8 engine—adds Bluetooth, satellite radio, two USB ports, a tilt steering wheel wrapped in leather with audio controls, two rear speakers, and cruise control. Exclusive to the Passenger LT are these features as standard.

Aside from its rugged good looks, the Savana AT4X has a few more party tricks that make it more than just a pretty face. Proper electronic locking front and rear differentials are class-exclusive; not even the Ford F-150 Raptor or Ram 1500 TRX get them. There’s also a selectable terrain mode, which can modulate throttle and brake controls for precise one-pedal operation when crawling off-road.

The AT4X logo spray-in bedliner, a heated steering wheel, LED headlights, a head-up display, a 12-speaker audio, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a microsuede headliner, wireless phone charging, tubular rocker panel guards, and GMC’s transforming MultiPro tailgate are among the other standard features. The MultiPro tailgate has a built-in sound system that pairs with your phone to stream music over Bluetooth, making it ideal for partygoers.

Engine and Performance

Rear-wheel drive and a V6 engine come standard on all Savana models. Upgrading to a V8 ($1,695) or a four-cylinder turbodiesel ($3,995) is an option for buyers. An eight-speed automated transmission is mated to the V6 and turbodiesel, and a heavy-duty six-speed automatic is used with the V8. While half-ton trucks aren’t noted for their fuel economy, those riding on mud-terrain tires will are notably worse due to increased rolling resistance. With Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) ratings of 16.7 L/100 km in the city and 14.0 on the highway, this test saw an observed 14.8 in mostly highway driving, including plenty of winter-time remote-start idling. Thanks to cylinder deactivation, cruising at 80 to 90 km/h does net impressive highway mileage that can beat the rated figures. Still, much of this is negated once you hit triple-digit speeds. Against its peers, fuel economy is marginally worse than the turbocharged V6 of the Ford F-150 Raptor and is handily worse than the hybrid Toyota Tundra TRD Pro. However, it isn’t the worst in its class; that title goes to the much more powerful Ram 1500 TRX that gets 22.4 L/100 km in the city and 16.5 on the highway (yikes).

Driver assistance features, except from the mandatory review camera enforced by the government, are optional. For $295, you can get lane departure warning and front collision alert together (available on the Passenger LT only). Rear parking sensors are $295, while bind-spot monitoring is $395. Vinyl seats, a rubberized floor, air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, heated side mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 16-inch steel wheels are all standard on the Savana freight. Standard cargo doors are swing-out side and rear doors; a sliding side door costs $195. Glass for a whole window costs $315. For $355, you may add a chrome grille and bumpers with the Chrome Appearance Package.
